My Personal Statement (2009)

I first became interested in music, as a young child, when I saw an older girl playing her violin in a park in Shanghai.  I started learning the violin when I was about four years old.  At each grade, my results improved and at grades nine and ten I achieved the highest possible score.

As my skills developed, I secured a place at the Middle School affiliated to Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2003, where I began studying standard violin and music theory.  Here there were many opportunities to perform and to attend master classes. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting students from other cultures and learning from the expertise of professional musicians.

Since I have been learning violin, I have had many performance opportunities.
In Autumn 2006, I won first prize in the Mozart Competition (Ceremony of Mozart's 250th Birthday).  Following this, I performed as a soloist with the whole school orchestra.  Also, in Summer 2006, I attended the 'Morningside Music Bridge' music course in Shanghai.

In 2007 I joined Chetham's School of Music where I am studying the violin with Mr. Repko.  In 2008 I won the school Concerto Competition and had performing with the school orchestra in both London and Manchester. Throughout my school life and my development as a musician, I have found that I like to research new ideas and am constantly inspired to try different things.

I love performing and reading biographies of the famous composers as well. Besides music, I am interested in the Arts: Ballet; Films; novel and poetry. I believe that musical language basically comes from nature and that its beauty is reflected in music. The Arts, Literature and Music can not be separated because they are influenced by each other. I hope one day to travel all over the world. In the meantime, my goal is to deepen my musical knowledge and thereby to continue to learn and develop during the next exciting stage of my life.
